Delay Plates
Halbo Optics is closed for business - see Homepage
Delay plates, which are essentially thick retarders, can be used to produce two half power pulses, separated by a defined interval, from one input pulse. The input plane of polarization is at 45° to the optic axis. In the plate, the input pulse is resolved into collinear ordinary and extraordinary pulses. These propagate at different group velocities, resulting in a separation between them in air. Delay plates are supplied manufactured from both quartz and calcite. The orientation of the optic axis is indicated by a small flat.
The time interval Δt is given by:
Δt = Δn.d/c
where:
Δn = birefringence
d = plate thickness
c = velocity of light
The spatial separation in air D is then:
D = Δn.d
Mounts
Delay plates can be supplied mounted (Type 3 or Type 2, depending on thickness). To specify mounted delay plates, simply add suffix:
M3 for Type 3 mount for component thicknesses up to 2mm
M2 for Type 2 mount for component thicknesses over 2mm
RM5 for Type 5 rotation mount for component thicknesses over 2mm

Standard Delay Plates
The product codes below are examples manufactured from calcite, which can also be manufactured from quartz (replace C with Q in the product code). Standard delay plates are circular, with the optic axis indicated by a small flat. If required, they can be supplied square with the optic axis along a diagonal to special order.

Custom Delay Plates
If the plate you require is not listed here, we can manufacture a custom special. Simply specify the aperture, time interval or separation and wavelength of operation.
